  Astigmatism

When not corrected, the astigmatic person's sight is characterized by a defective recognition of details which affects the clarity of near as well as distant objects. This is due to a curvature defect of the cornea or crystalline lens. Instead of being round-shaped (like a soccer ball), the cornea is oval-shaped like a rugby ball. This is why vertical lines are more clearly seen than horizontal lines.
